Community Projects

Open source geospatial projects in the OSGeo ecosystem

Overview

What are Community Projects?

Community Projects are open source geospatial software that has joined the OSGeo ecosystem but has not yet completed the full incubation process. These projects benefit from:

  • OSGeo infrastructure - mailing lists, wiki space, and hosting
  • Community support - connection to the broader open source geospatial community
  • Mentorship - guidance toward meeting OSGeo project standards
  • Visibility - promotion through OSGeo channels and events

Community projects may be working toward full OSGeo project status through incubation, or may be associated projects that benefit from the OSGeo umbrella without seeking full graduation.

Projects

Current Community Projects

The OSGeo community ecosystem includes a diverse range of projects at various stages of development:

Incubating Projects

Projects actively working through the OSGeo incubation process to become full OSGeo projects.

Associated Projects

Projects that use OSGeo infrastructure and are part of the community but are not in formal incubation.

Path

The Path to Full Project Status

Community projects interested in becoming full OSGeo projects can apply for incubation. The incubation process evaluates:

Start

Open Source Requirements

  • OSI-approved open source license
  • All dependencies must be license-compatible
  • Clear intellectual property ownership

Community Health

  • Open and welcoming community
  • Multiple active contributors
  • Responsive to users and contributors
  • Clear contribution guidelines

Technical Standards

  • Version control (typically Git)
  • Issue tracking system
  • Documentation (user and developer)
  • Quality assurance practices
  • Regular releases

Governance

  • Transparent decision-making
  • Project steering committee or equivalent
  • Code of conduct adoption
